The Oval

The OvalThe Oval in Kennington, south London is one of the world’s most historic and iconic sporting venues. Officially known as The Kia Oval, the ground is most famous as a venue for Test cricket and being the home of Surrey County Cricket Club. The Oval is one of the most popular London attractions with sport lovers, with tens of thousands of cricket fans visiting each summer. The English cricket season runs between April and September, with The Oval hosting a variety of county and international matches in that time.

The most prestigious events to take place at The Oval are the England team’s Test matches. There is normally one England Test fixture held at The Oval per summer. England also play 50-over one-day fixtures at The Oval each summer, and will often play a Twenty20 fixture there too. The Oval is home to the historic Surrey County Cricket Club, who play most of their home fixtures at the ground and compete in English cricket’s major domestic competitions. Much of South London was part of the historic country of Surrey.

As with London’s other major cricket venue, Lord’s, The Oval occasionally plays host to international cricket matches between two non-English nations, which are always attended in large numbers by London’s international communities. The availability and price of tickets for matches at The Oval varies according to the fixture in question – see the venue’s official website for details. The Oval also offers tours of the ground which will fascinate those with a real passion for cricket. The ground used to host high-profile football matches too, with The Oval hosting early FA Cup Finals as well as the first-ever international football match, which was contested between England and Scotland in 1870.
