Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of the world’s most famous parks. Located in central London, Hyde Park’s eclectic range of features ensure that there is something here for tourists of all ages and tastes. Spread over a magnificent 350 acres this is perhaps the most notable of London’s prestigious royal parks. The free admission makes visiting Hyde Park a must for tourists looking for free things to do in London and this remains one of the most visited London attractions.
Hyde Park’s highlights include the Diana Fountain, a memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales; boating on The Serpentine lake in the spring and summer months; the July 7th Memorial, a tribute to those Londoners murdered by terrorists on July 7th 2005; Speakers’ Corner, the most famous speakers' corner on the planet; swimming at The Lido during the summer months; and the Gun Salutes that take place in Hyde Park each year to mark The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh's birthdays.
Hyde Park is famous for hosting major one-off concerts – with the likes of Live 8 Concert and 2009’s Blur comeback having taken place here – as well as the annual Hard Rock Calling festival. Those London tourists looking for something more tranquil from Hyde Park should check out the beautiful Rose Garden and the wildlife of the meadow. There are several playgrounds situated around the park to keep the kids happy; indeed the park becomes swamped with children each Christmas when Winter Wonderland makes its annual festive appearance. Hyde Park will add a new slant to its history in 2012 when it becomes a venue for the London 2012 Olympics. Hyde Park will host the London Olympic Games' triathlon and marathon swimming.
